Children’s dental care

Paediatric Dentistry

Prevention, early treatment and practical support for children and parents.

Children’s dentistry supports oral health from the first teeth through the teenage years. Baby teeth matter for eating, speech and guiding the developing adult teeth.

Prevention and confidence

Arrange an early visit when the first teeth appear, ideally by the first birthday. Your dentist can advise on brushing, food choices and a suitable review schedule. Fluoride varnish and fissure sealants may be recommended to help protect teeth from decay.

Treatment when it is needed

  • Fillings restore a tooth affected by decay.
  • A pulpotomy treats the pulp in the crown of a tooth in selected cases.
  • A pulpectomy removes infected pulp from the tooth, including the root canals, when appropriate.
  • A space maintainer may help preserve room for an adult tooth after a baby tooth is lost early.

Preparing for a visit

Tell the team your child’s age and any concerns. The dentist will assess which treatments are suitable and explain the options to you. Some children or procedures may need specialist referral.

Your dentist will explain suitable options, alternatives and the proposed next steps before treatment.
